This presentation will share the results of a recent Instructional Skills Workshop I co-facilitated at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV). The workshop participants were 16 English-language instructors from Xi’an Fanyi University (XFU) in China, who were visiting UFV to learn more about our teaching practices and programs as our two institutions work together to develop laddering agreements and exchange programs. The workshop provided unexpected learning opportunities for both the XFU instructors and the UFV instructors: XFU instructors learned about the power of facilitation as opposed to instruction; UFV facilitators learned about the attitudes and expectations of our Chinese students. As a Communications instructor in a department that has a high percentage of international, particularly Chinese, students, I will change my teaching practice based on what I learned. The poster will also highlight our use of graphic facilitation techniques on the final day of the workshop and their impact.
